I'm unfamiliar with the legal system codes. How do I interpret the "court" abbreviations (eg: weidce, candce) and reference number (1:2006cv00541)?

Thank you,

Dave

Hi Dave -

Sorry for the delay in responding to your quote, it was stuck in the comment spam filter.

The court codes are generally in the following format:

(statecode)(courtcode)

So, pawdce stands for Pennsylvania Western District court.

The case code is the year of filing (with a type separator - i.e. cv, stands for civil) followed by the number assigned to that case.

So, 2:2005cv01248 is a civil case (cv) which was filed in 2005 and given number 01248 by the court.

Once you know the case number, you can log into the Federal Court Docket clearinghouse (need account) and use the case number to pull up the documents that you are interested in seeing (complaint, judgment etc.) Not all documents are scanned and made available by all courts, but it is pretty good.

The clearinghouse is known as PACER and can be accessed here:
https://pacer.login.uscourts.gov/cgi-bin/login.pl?court_id=00idx

If you need any further help, let me know!

Douglas
